How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are important to your home’s beauty and comfort; they offer a beautiful view of the outdoors, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your house. Because they are so vital to a home, they go through a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that continue to enhance your home.

Window glass can get dirty pretty fast, especially with little hands or pets in the home, but fortunately glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many Pella Windows and Doors windows have features that it make it less painful to clean the exterior of your windows from indoors, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors suggests:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and brushing will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. You should not use the same cleaning rag that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment on the side of your window screen that faces in. You can also use this vacuum piece to grab any leftover dirt and dust along your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your glass. You can create your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. Let your windows air dry after cleaning and then rinse your glass with clean water if there are any streaks left.

Here are some more tips, too! We encourage you to clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution quicker and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors professionals select microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your attractive view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean all year long.
