Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can put a stop to flying baseballs and others can weather hurricane-force winds. How?

In regard to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are meticulously tested for impact resistance.

Tests involve shooting a two-by-four at the window to verify glass remains intact. We use our hurricane cannon to fire the wood, which covers 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We concluded, if we could design a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could find a solution that could halt home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was contacted to help supply a historic building outside of Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s just what we did.

We overhauled our hurricane cannon to evaluate the home run-resistant windows. We fired baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would reconstruct the power of a home run.

Our tempered glass resisted the baseballs best because it’s tougher and safer than standard annealed glass.

All About Physics

It warrants a speed of more than 100 mph and a height greater than 100 feet to shoot a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s situation, we found the baseballs would be traveling at about 60 mph upon impact with windows.

But we went above and beyond and tested impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not thinking about an MLB home run propelling toward your residence, there are many reasons to select durable, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s ideal for homeowners who want an added level of protection from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are raising the next great baseball player.

Review the advantages and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Strong glass much like what is used in car windows.
  • Used where injuries from broken glass are a concern.
  • Normally fragments into small, square pieces rather than sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t fall apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To discover more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Decatur at 217-423-7722. Or, request a free, in-home consultation online.
